Bytefree
v. 3.3
========
07/19/88
Both a Desk Accessory and a Program at the same time! Read below!
Version 3.3 now has the resource imbedded in the program itself, which
saves the program from having to load it seperately, and also saves 37K
in the process. So if you were leary about memory usage before, this
version reduces memory overhead by about 50%!
[If you have any ideas for this program, or for another program, please
get ahold of me. I've been looking for a decent project, and would be
willing to consider most ideas...]
This is the third version of my hard drive free space listing program.
I wrote the first one so that I could find the free space on all
available partitions of my hard drive (very helpful for bbs maintenance)
and it wasn't very fast. It would take 17 seconds on my 8 partition
hard drive. The second version was much faster (it took alot of extra
work!) and now it took about 1.5 seconds.
The third version is even faster still, and has replaced the tos
based interface with a gem interface. The program is fairly unique in
that it is both a desk accessory and a program at the same time. To use
it as a desk accessory, you need to rename the program file to
bytfre33.acc, and place it and the resource file on your boot drive where
the rest of your accessories are located. If you want to run it as a
program then all you have to do is leave it named bytfre33.prg and it will
run fine as a program.
The program will display the free space on each partition, listing both
bytes and Kilobytes and percent used. A total of the same is kept at the
bottom of the dialog, and the user may deselect active drives at will, and
the current total will be continuously updated. To deselect a drive, you
click on the drive letter for the drive you want to deselect. The program
will remember your choices until you exit the program. If you have the
program configured as a desk accessory though, your choices will be
retained between usages. This will allow you to remove the results from
your ram disk program if it is affecting the totals.
I have included the old tos version in the arc for the people who use
shells more than the desktop.
If you are running a bbs, or collect alot of software on your hard drive
I am sure you will find Bytfree to be useful.
Without a hard drive, this program is just a free memory lister, but
even at that it is useful!
Bytefree is SHAREWARE. You may use it all you want, without having to pay
for it, but if you like to see useful utilities released by
me and other SHAREWARE committed programmers, then send a donation
to the address below!
(Hey, even $1.00 will buy me a Super Big Gulp to drink while writing
my next program! So, no amount is too little.)
========
If you have any suggestions at all on how it could be improved, then by
all means get ahold of me at my address/phone below, or on the bbs.
